Galaktoboureko is a traditional Greek custard pie dessert cooked in the oven. Galaktoboureko is mainly made up of layers of thin pastry (phyllo), butter, cream and syrup.

The pastry is wrapped around the cream and while the pastry and cream are very hot, the syrup is pored over the crispy pastry allowing it to soak in the syrup.

There is a variety of recipes and ways of making it as each area in Greece and Cyprus adds their own ingredients or cooking methods to the recipe.

For example in some areas the cream can be made with lemon, orange, rose ­or vanilla.
