The Highest Peak of Cyprus Mount Olympos, also known as Chionistra, is the highest peak in Cyprus, standing at an impressive 1,952 meters (6,404 feet) above sea level. Located in the Troodos Mountain Range, this iconic summit is a year-round destination that offers breathtaking views, rich biodiversity, and exciting activities for nature lovers, hikers, and winter sports enthusiasts.

Mount Olympos is situated in the Troodos National Forest Park, a region known for its lush greenery, unique geology, and diverse wildlife. The mountain has played a significant role in the history and culture of Cyprus, with ancient myths linking it to the gods of Olympus. Though not as famous as its Greek counterpart in Thessaly, Cyprus’ Olympos is still a place of legends and awe-inspiring beauty. In the past, the mountain was an important location for mining, as the Troodos range is rich in copper and other minerals. During the Venetian period, Mount Olympos and the surrounding forests were also crucial for timber production, contributing to shipbuilding and trade.

Mount Olympos is a destination that changes dramatically with the seasons, offering visitors a variety of experiences throughout the year.

1. Winter Sports at the Cyprus Ski Resort

During the winter months, usually from December to March, Mount Olympos becomes a popular spot for skiing and snowboarding. The Cyprus Ski Club operates four ski slopes, each named after Greek gods: Zeus (Advanced) Hera (Intermediate) Aphrodite (Beginner) Hermes (Beginner) The ski lifts provide easy access to the slopes, making it a favorite winter getaway for both locals and tourists.

2. Hiking and Nature Trails

During the rest of the year, Mount Olympos is a paradise for hikers and nature enthusiasts. The area features several well-marked hiking trails, such as: Artemis Trail (7 km, circular) – A relatively easy trail that encircles the peak of Mount Olympos, offering stunning views of Cyprus. Atalanti Trail (14 km, circular) – A longer but rewarding route passing through pine forests and scenic landscapes. These trails are part of the European Long-Distance Path E4, which stretches from Spain to Cyprus.

3. Troodos National Forest Park

The Troodos Mountains are home to an incredible ecosystem, with dense forests of black pine, golden oak, and cedar trees. The area is protected due to its unique biodiversity, including rare endemic plants and animals such as the Cyprus mouflon (Ovis gmelini ophion), a wild sheep species found only on the island.

4.The Summit and Military Radar Station

Unlike many mountain peaks that are open to the public, the very top of Mount Olympos is restricted, as it houses a British military radar station. This station is part of the UK's Sovereign Base Areas in Cyprus. While the summit itself is not accessible, visitors can still reach impressive vantage points nearby that provide panoramic views of the island, stretching as far as the Mediterranean Sea.

Mount Olympos is easily accessible by road from various parts of Cyprus: From Nicosia: 75 km (~1.5 hours drive) From Limassol: 50 km (~1 hour drive) From Paphos: 65 km (~1.5 hours drive) The Troodos Square area serves as the main starting point for excursions to Mount Olympos. Visitors will find cafés, restaurants, and accommodation options in nearby villages such as Platres, Kakopetria, and Troodos Village

Best Time to Visit Winter (December – March): Ideal for skiing and snow activities. Spring & Autumn (April – June & September – November): Perfect for hiking, nature walks, and photography. Summer (July – August): A great escape from the island’s heat, as temperatures in the Troodos Mountains remain cooler compared to coastal areas.

Mount Olympos is a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Cyprus. Whether you're looking for snow-covered slopes, scenic hiking trails, or breathtaking views, this mountain offers a unique experience in every season. Its rich history, diverse ecosystem, and recreational activities make it a perfect destination for adventure seekers and nature lovers alike.
