A Phycis Phycis (forkbeard) is a dredge type fish that lives at a depth of 15 to 600 metres, in stony substrates adjacent to sand and mud. It is a nocturnal type and usually hides in rock cavities during the day. A forkbeard can exceed 60 centimetres in length and 3 kilos in weight, even though the usual length does not exceed 40 centimetres and its weight does not exceed 1 kilo. It mostly feeds on small fish and invertebrates.
Reproduction takes place during January to May. Forkbeards are caught with static nets, bottom trawl and longliners. It is not considered to be a good quality fish, therefore its price on the market is low.
