Cyprus Fishing Shelters

The Department of Fisheries and Marine Research maintains and manages 16 fishing shelters for the safe mooring of professional fishing vessels. The programme for the creation of fishing shelters began with the establishment of the Department in 1964. Great importance was given to the construction of fishing shelters towards the north coasts of the island.

After the Turkish Invasion in 1974, these shelters became inaccessible; therefore, the Department began to create new fishing shelters in the area of Ammochostos area and the Larnaca district.

The existing fishing shelters are modernised in order to respond to the needs of the professionals and the safety of their vessels. However, the fishing shelters also serve non-professionals as other vessels are allowed to dock when there is availability.

Apart from this, ramps are located at nearly all of the fishing shelters and can be used by any citizen as long as the fishing shelter operation is not disturbed. In particular ramps are located at the following fishing shelters : Paralimni , Ayia Napa , Liopetri River , Xylofagou , Ormidhia , Xylotymbou , Larnaca , Zygi , Agiou Georgiou Peyia , Pomos and Kato Pyrgos.
