In the heart of the Cypriot countryside lies the village of Platanistasa, home to the remarkable Archangel Michael Church. This sacred site is not just a place of worship but a repository of art and history, nestled amidst the serene landscape of Cyprus.

The church was built during the 19th century in the place of another smaller church of the 15th century that was demolished by our ancestors, who did not know its value. The church has a wooden roof and took the form it has today in 1916. A visitor can admire the wonderful templo of this church and the excellent portable icons, mostly dated to 1883. The village cemetery was located in the church yard until 1941, when the new village cemetery was built and the remains of those who were buried at Archangel Michael were transferred to the new cemetery.

The church, dedicated to Archangel Michael(the Archangel of the sky),  stands out for its intricate frescoes, which are considered masterpieces of Byzantine art. These frescoes, vividly depicting scenes from the Bible, are not only spiritually significant but also offer insights into the artistic traditions of the era. They are a testament to the skill and devotion of the artists who created them centuries ago.

Visitors to the church are often struck by the harmonious blend of spirituality and art. The calm and peaceful ambiance of the church provides a perfect setting for contemplation and appreciation of its artistic heritage. Each fresco, icon, and architectural detail tells a story, weaving a rich tapestry of faith and history.

The church's architecture is a reflection of traditional Cypriot style, characterized by modest yet elegant design. It stands as a symbol of the enduring nature of Cypriot culture and religious devotion. The preservation of the church and its artworks has been a priority, ensuring that future generations can continue to enjoy and learn from this cultural treasure.

For those interested in the history of Cyprus, the Archangel Michael Church in Platanistasa ( Nicosia ) is a must-visit destination. It offers a unique glimpse into the island's past, its religious traditions, and its artistic achievements.
