Limassol is a coastal district in the southern part of Cyprus. It is a relatively new district, even though clues have been found that prove that it was inhabited from antiquity. It is built amphitheatrically over the Acrotiri Bay between the two ancient cities of Amathounda towards the east, and Kourion to the west.
The Limassol district is one of the 6 districts and it is the third largest district on the island. It has an extent of 1393 square kilometres, forming the 15, 07% of the island. It borders with the Paphos district to the west, the Nicosia district to the north, and the Larnaca district to the east.
Limassol is then divided into 6 municipalities and 116 communities. The six municipalities are: Limassol, Kato Polemidia, Mesa Geitonia, Agios Athanasios, Germasogeia and Ypsonas. To the north Limassol extends north until the village of Lemithou, to the east until the village of Alektora, to the south until Acrotiri and to the west until Pentakomo. Most of the Limassol villages are located towards the north east (Wine villages) and north west (Koummandaria region and Pitisilia region).
All of the 106 villages have their own unique beauty and attraction. There are many attractions in the villages ranging from churches, monasteries , museums, culture attractions and nature attractions. The many churches, chapels, monasteries in all of the villages also show how religious the residents are. The museums along with other cultural buildings help preserve the culture and the customs that each village has.
The wine villages in Limassol are truly exceptional and different from others on the island. The wine villages stand out for their distinctive fauna and flora and the geology of the area makes it ideal for vineyards. Many of the villages have also preserved the local architecture and stone paved roads providing tourists and locals with a traditional experience.
Each village has traditional restaurants and shops that can offer you with the local cuisine as well as the local products that it produces (wine, commandaria, zivania, spoon sweets, soutzouko) and the Cypriot hospitality.
